Set on a woodland site that slopes down to the shore of Lake Michigan this shingled complex of vacation retreat and guest house form an elliptical courtyard which serves as an unexpected arrival point and heart of the buildings. The ceiling of the double bracket-shaped great room mimics the interior of a great wooden dory, overturned but sheltering. The house’s arc acts to provide each lakeside room with its own distinct view, like an over scaled bay window. Local limestone retaining walls with arched apertures anchor the house into the site; white birches and native flora complete the intimate setting.
